A Flavor of Courage: Halloween Sweets & Ghostly Treats!

A savory, ghostly tale of defeating fear and recipes to stuff your faces full of scrumptious desserts!

Overcoming fear has never been so delicious!

There once was a little, pink ghost named Fantasma. Now as a ghost, you'd think little Fantasma would be void to fear and out playing ghoulish tricks on unsuspecting victims...But if given the opportunity to wisp around a haunted mansion, Fantasma would be the first to screech outside the door! Little Fantasma was a scaredy cat (well, ghost) through and through...but he was also the sweetest little ghoul you'd ever want to meet. Sweeter than chocolate in fact.

One ominous, rainy night Fantasma heard a loud thump at his creaky door. Jumping out of his ghostly body ten feet in the air, he zipped like lightning towards the door and snatched up an orange envelope. It was an invitation to a Halloween party! Happy that his friends had thought of him, Fantasma hugged the letter like a newborn puppy monster. But his fear slowly began to nestle in too. How could he possibly go outside in such a frightening world? After hours of hair-raising contemplations, he took a deep breath and decided to float outside to the party.

Fantasma started his journey upon an eerie road frantically eyeing his environment...When all of a sudden a Grinning Grizzly Monster appeared under the moonlit path!! The fastest Olympic racers on Earth couldn't have kept up with how speedily that pink, little ghost ran away!

Miles away from the swamp, Fantasma began to sit and weep. Finally, when Little Fantasma didn't know what else to do, a whisper in his heart reminded him to pray. Pray for courage. Pray for protection. Pray to be guided through the horrible night. The prayer filled his heart with confidence and reminded him that Jesus would always be with him no matter how scary things got.

Fantasma dusted himself off with renewed determination and hope. Nothing would stop him from arriving at his spooky destination tonight. Eventually, the little ghost found himself in a field of ripe, carved jack-o-lanterns. The autumn orange air was brimming with a dead silence. But Fantasma would no longer be swayed to fear. He hovered into the pumpkin path closer and closer, until...

SUPRISE! All of Fantasma's friends jumped out of the pumpkin patch and pummeled him with love. Fantasma had found his courage and found the people he loved most. All thanks to one little Halloween prayer. And the party turned out to be sweeter than any piece of candy he would ever taste! The end.

Halloween doesn't have to be a spine-chilling, gore-filled event of terror! Sometimes it can be bone-chillingly adorable, silly, and most of all a scrumptious time to stuff our faces with mouth-watering, ghoulish treats 😋

General Cake Directions:

1. Coat pan lightly with oil or butter and add a bit of flour to help the cake not stick to the pan.

2. Mix eggs, cake mix, water, and oil into a bowl. Drizzle a bit of chocolate syrup or melted chocolate into the cake mix. Thoroughly mix until smooth and all air bubbles are flattened out.

3. Pour cake mix onto pan. Begin to put into oven.

4. Bake for about 30-40 minutes. Possibly more or less depending on size of the pan. An 8 inch pan takes typically 25-45 minutes.

Warning: Let cool before adding icing because the cake will be too hot and tear easily if you try and spread icing with a knife!

5. Coat the cake in your favorite icing. Some cakes may require adding a pinch of safe food coloring to get desired colors. Add chocolate melts, cookie crumbs, whipped cream, etc. circling the cake or however you’d like to arrange them.

6. You don’t have to use a regular pan and have a circle or square cake. Get creative! Try using other molding pan shapes or even cutting the shape of the cake into a ghost! All you need is a good cutting utensil and a stencil to base it off of. And it’s okay if it doesn’t come out right. All that matters is that it’s fun and delicious!

I hope you can set aside some time to crawl out of the tomb or rise from those dusty, old coffins to bake a few of these ghastly goodies. And if the late night howling at the moon or the shadowy images bouncing across the dark continue to make you tremble, remember you have Someone always with you who remains victorious over fear. Happy Halloween! 🎃
